Flirting Tours
Decode the Secret Flirting Signals
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to decode the secret flirting signals of your fellow Londoners; your mission will be accomplished when you secure yourself a date.
Unfortunately, Londoners won’t be an easy mark, according to flirting reconnaissance involving 250 in-depth interviews with single males and females between the ages of 25-45 from London, Dublin, Paris, Stockholm, New York and Chicago. Of these, six of the world’s major cities, Londoners are second only to Stockholm inhabitants in hesitancy about making the first move, and further analysis confirms that the principle underlying all London flirting is fear of rejection.
Jean Smith, cultural anthropologist and founder of the “Flirting and Walking Tours of London”, conducted the field research and provides the following key extracts for successful flirting assignments:
- SET YOUR HAIR STYLING TO STUN – London men indicate that a woman flicking her hair is the biggest give-away that they are attracted – so women, if you want to blow your cover, channel your inner Farrah Fawcett, “Charlie’s Angels” style, to the utmost.
- FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – Men, be sure to allocate a woman’s eye contact proper importance. According to research findings, in London, a woman making extended eye contact is the equivalent of a man walking up to a woman they haven’t met, saying, “The wildebeest runs amok in Vladivostok, fancy a drink?”, or similar.
- MAINTAIN CONTACT WITH YOUR MARK – For Londoners, touch is the key differentiator between friendliness and flirting. Touching is more effective when instigated by a woman, but men need not despair, as awareness of approachability indicators is vital in decoding those subtle signals. When initiating touch, start with safe zones such as shoulders and arms, and if all goes to plan, make light contact with your target’s hands. Use touch in greeting and emphasising points, and linger ever-so-slightly.

“A compelling mix of anthropological research, fun tips for relaxed flirting and hilarious anecdotes from the effervescent Jean Smith, the Flirting & Walking tour is the ultimate icebreaker. Last night I learned how to start a conversation with a stranger and how to get out of a bad conversation gracefully – surely two of the most useful skills ever!
And what fun – I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group of 12 people bond so quickly, chat so frankly or root for one another so warmly in such a short space of time. Highly recommended and highly successful – one girl got a very cute musician’s phone number and another found a new friend to go off clubbing with!”- Laura, 35
